Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre is a hidden gem I only discovered recently. I came across Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre when browsing the Google Maps for Sha Tin looking at possible observation points. I was curious and after a quick taxi up I realized just how wonderful this Christian retreat is. It’s an entire complex up in the mountains overlooking Sha Tin that allows Christians to spend some time finding their spirituality and contemplating life and religion. It’s not your typical church, having very strong Chinese influences, with nice pavilions, Chinese architecture buildings, and Chinese gardens. There are also various areas to rest and contemplate, some having some fantastic views of the area.
I also found a nice hike that starts a bit further up the hill that connects the nearby Lutheran Theological Seminary with its cemetery, up the hills to the Greenwood Terrance residential area with its Lion Pavilion. It takes about an hour up and down the mountains, with calm shaded forest nature, and occasional green mountain views towards Sha Tin.
Overall, I came in for a quick look, and ended up with a 5 hour exploration of the retreat and the nearby mountains with an unplanned hike. You just gotta love that side of unexpected Hong Kong…
