This Chinese new year, I returned to Thailand after 14 years of being away. I can’t imagine why it took me so long. Especially having lived in Asia for a few years since. But I’m very glad that I did. My visit to Koh Samui, which I remembered as an over-touristy commercialized island, compared to Koh Pengan, turned out to be quite lovely. I guess it depends on where you stay on the island. By accident, really didn’t plan it, my beach resort was next to the local China Town street, and so I got to enjoy quiet and crystal clear waters, and see the wonderful local Chinese new year celebrations, lion dances, fireworks, and all. I did a few very enjoyable scooter trips around the island and explored areas I have not been to before, with the highlight being a mountain top temple overlooking the Koh Samui east coast.
I was a very memorable trip.
