How to summarize Cusco? It was both one of the biggest highlights and the lowest of lows of my 2022. I was extremely lucky to land on the day of the sun festival with some crazy local festivities, and to arrive in Machu Picchu with a cheerful group on gorgeous weather during a time when there were very few tourists and extremely last minute day-before booking. Super lucky. But, the day after my arrival back from Machu my body gave in, and it took me a while to realize this was altitude sickness and this lingered until I finally made the unfortunate but posthoc correct decision to fly out back to Lima and let my body heal. Those couple of days not being able to breath with no understanding of what’s happening to me went pretty dark pretty fast, and I’m just grateful I got to do a bit before that and was able to pull myself out of it and recover fast. It could have been much worse.
So, this probably demonstrates the duality of travel. Highs and lows mixed today. One day you’re up, one day you’re down, and you need to embrace it all, the good with the bad, such is travel life, and all are experiences to remember that will forever be a part of me.
Here’s a bit of my visions from the trip focusing on the highlights of my brief visit to Cusco…
