I’ve long wanted to visit Malaysia, and in 2023 I finally got the chance to do it. I started off with Kuching and Kota Kinabalu were okay, though I liked Penang a lot better, and for me the highlight, strangely enough, was Kuala Lumpur. Given all I’ve been told I’ve come to expect so little of this city, but it impressed me in many ways. Perhaps the key to happiness in travel is low expectations.
Despite just opening up and coming out of a pandemic, I found it bustling and happening, with a wide range of budget options, lots going on, with wonderful live music, even theater playing in English, something I’ve missed and looked for for very long. I found museums, exhibitions, great parks to explore, and plenty of observation decks for me to look at the city from above. I even went on a weekend escape to the mountains to ride cable cars and see some temples. Though it was hot, there was a good combination of indoors and outdoors and I could always balance the outside heat with something indoors-y.
So, to give you a feel of the things I saw and experienced in Kuala Lumpur, here are my visions photo walk summary of Malaysia’s capital city…
