Heraklion is the capital of Crete, but most see it just as a getaway to other nice spots on the island. Still, it has quite a bit to offer, with some wonderful historical attractions. One such attraction is the Rocca a Mare Fortress on the northern coast near the entrance to the old city of Heraklion. It was built by the Venetians in the 16th century, on top of some ruins as far back as the 9th century. There’s a museum inside, a nice lookout from the fortress top in all directions. You can cover the entire place in about an hour, and then continue to tour the coastline and up the walls surrounding the old city…
