One of the highlights of my visit to Crete was Balos Beach. An unexpected treat, as far away off road as you can get in Crete, it involves some rough driving for almost an hour, and then an hour hike to and from. You could also join the one daily boat tour coming in from the central town piers, but there is something magical about doing the whole trip yourself and then seeing the grand views from abo as you approach the beach from the mountain.
I admit that a few times along the drive and the hike I doubted whether this was worth it, but there’s no doubt that this place is nothing short of spectacular, and worth every effort. I only wish I prepared better, though you can find food, drinks, and some of the basics like sunscreen in the one canteen on the beach.
It’s wonderful to soak in, there are some walks and adventure paths all around the lagoon, can easily spend a few hours in there, just be mindful of the sun, there aren’t many places to escape the sun in that area. You could also rent a cover.
Overall, one of the most beautiful spots I had the pleasure of visiting in 2021. Crete and Greece magic.
