In my final day in Crete I was exploring the region east to Heraklion, and I started my day at the Lychnostatis Open Air Museum that shows Cretan traditional life. It started with a brief presentation (can skip) and then you have an audio tour that takes through several buildings and areas with different traditional elements.
It’s a terrific museum, very nicely done, and you do get to experience quite a lot. A great way to spend a couple of hours trying to connect to local culture. It’s right at the sea, so there’s also a beach nearby if you fancy a swim.
