The Maclehose Trail Sections 1 and 2 in Sai Kung are some of my favorite hikes in Hong Kong. They include some of the best scenic views and natural beaches in the region, with breath-taking views of the Sai Kung UNESCO national geopark. There are many ways to hike these trails, but on this occasion I decided to take a taxi up to Sai Wan Pavilion inside the park and start my hike half way, returning to High Island Reservoir East Dam through the Maclehose Trail Section 1.
The advantage of doing it this way is that you start with easy walking, straight into the national park, without too many people around, and getting to a secluded beach fairly fast.
It starts off with the High Island Reservoir…
But soon after you’ll hit the observation point with a glimpse at the gorgeous beaches of Sai Kung…
But rather than going in that direction, we’ll continue along the reservoir…
Until we hit the peak, and from there it’s mostly down towards the southern beaches of the hike…
And we’re at the beach…
Start climbing up again, to get some grand views of the sandy white beach from above…
To hit the high island reservoir dam…
With its curious geo rock formations…
Can wonder down to the cave, to get an up-close view of these rocks…
