Last time I visited Po Toi Island was in 2014, doing my last hike before leaving Hong Kong and moving to the United States. It was a glorious day on a gorgeous island, but I only managed to see the western half of it and ever since I’ve wanted to return and see the rest. What a beautiful place. The eastern side of Po Toi is even better that the western part, with breath-taking views and spectacular panoramas with unobstructed views of the islands and the sea. There are also some local attractions, with historical markings, and local treats that have grown a bit since I was there last.
Off from the ferry you can choose – west, east, or – if you have the time – both. As you’ll see below many Hong Kong folks bring tents and stay overnight.
We’ll head east this time…
Some historical markings…
And we’ll continue on the path…
Random beach spots here and there…
And up for the first observation point…
Climbing up even further to this structure (lighthouse?)…
Nearby lots of campers…
We’ll continue north along the island edge…
And start making our climb to the island’s top…
How did this stone get to the top?
And then, facing west, heading back to the ferry …
Arriving back at the village…
And that’s it. A wonderful getaway.
How to get here?
I arrived with a ferry from Aberdeen. You’d want to arrive atleast an hour early, mine left 30 minutes early because it was already full. They might have brought another, I’m not sure. My return was to Stanley, which I think is more frequent, so you have both options.
