One of the most famous hikes in Hong Kong is Dragon’s Back. It’s the nicest hike on Hong Kong Island, offering some of the most spectacular views of Hong Kong Island’s towards the east, south, and a bit of the west. It’s a fairly easy hike, and it ends in the wonderful beaches of Shek O, the hippie surfer laid back area of the island.
I’ve done this many times before, but not since 2013, so it was nice to revisit this. I did this during August, when Hong Kong is scorching hot, so started my hike up early just after 6 am and ended up in Shek O village around 10am. Given the weather and the hour, I was almost alone on the trail, and the clean air offered some of my best shots of that hike ever.

So, up we go from (the now closed) Tai Tam Gap Correctional Institution, to spare myself much of the incline, and soon you encounter this gorgeous scenery…
Every stop on that trail is terrific. At the end there’s the treat of the Shek O beach. If you do it on a weekday, and you’re lucky, it can be very empty.
And you can also explore around the village…
If you want to see what the first incline is before the grand views…
Most of it shaded, with glimpses of the Stanley area…
