During my last month in Europe before moving to Asia, I tried to see as much as possible from Europe in parts I have not visited before. Examining the Europe map I realized I have not visited any of the former Soviet north-east, aside from Russia, which was said to be very different, and so I was curious to go take a quick look on a weekend getaway. Plenty of cheap flights flying from the Netherlands and so I looked up options and realized I’ve never been to Romania. A quick Wizzair flight from Eindhoven and I arrived at Timisoara, which the Lonely Planet described as the Vienna of the east. I think that was an exaggeration, but there’s no doubt the small old center is quite lovely, there are some interesting attractions (culture village) and places to hang out (the “Communist Consumers Museum” cafe), plenty for a weekend.
To get a feel for the town, here are my visions of Timisoara, Romania…
