My visit to Serbia was short, so centered mainly around Belgrade with a quick getaway trip to Novi Sad. In Novi Sad I had exactly enough time to visit the hill-top fortress and see a bit of the old town center. Although Novi Sad suffered some of the heaviest NATO bombing during the war, there’s very little that remains of that in the city, perhaps aside from the relatively new and uninspiring bridges, and the old side of Novi Sad and the Petrovaradin Fortress are as lovely as ever. The views from up on the hill are spectacular, overlooking the grand river with high mountains rising in the background and old historical buildings underneath. It’s a fun day trip, and you can do it all with easy Taxis from the train station, an hour train/bus ride away from Belgrade to the west.
