It’s a bit embarrassing that I’ve seen so much of the world but have never been to Africa before 2022. Though the world was still coming out of a pandemic, I was long overdue to visit, and so my first stop ever to the continent was Johannesburg, South Africa. I’ve heard many things, but honestly did not know what to expect, and this visit was a very humbling experience. So many things about this visit got me to rethink basic truths about the world and who I am, to confront topics that I don’t often think about, but perhaps should. It was a glimpse into a new world that deserves and demands the world’s attention, and is only the tip of the iceberg to all else that goes on in the larger context Africa.
Though all social, cultural, historical, economic-political issues need to be discussed in depth, for what I can share here, all that I can do is share a bit of my photo impressions of this complex city.
So, as an inadequate start, here are my photo summary visions of Johannesburg, South Africa…
