Tung Lung Chao is an island to the east of Hong Kong island and south of the Clearwater Bay area. There are a few ferries from both HK island and Kowloon sides, and many HK hikers like to stay on that island camping over night. It’s a very easy getaway offering a wonderful 4 hour circular walk with panoramic views in all directions, combining both urban views to the west and north with some scenic nature views towards the south and east.
During my first visit to the island in 2016 I only came in to the beaches and the very short between those, not taking the time for the wonderful hike around the island.
In 2020 and then again taking a friend in 2021, I came back to do the whole island. There is very little shade, and my first time around I didn’t plan ahead very well and didn’t carry enough water during very hot weather. So this ended up being a lot more difficult and demanding than I thought it would be. Regardless of what direction you go, there is a slow hike up going from the western side, and then slowly climbing all the way up to the very top, with a steep decline towards the camping grounds and the beaches. That’s how I did things both times. Another option is to do this the other way, a very steep incline towards the top, and then leisurely walk down.
Somewhere in the middle you have the option to go explore an extension to the south, which you should definitely go do. Lovely spots there to sit and rest, with breath-taking views towards the south.
So, here’s a bit from my two full-island visits to Tung Lung.
First 2020 visit
Second 2021 visit, taking a friend
