The Jaffa Flea Market, or Shuk Hapispishim (שוק הפישפשים), is a really fun market featuring all sorts of interesting people and shops selling just about anything. From utterly useless junk to up-market Judaica and art, you can find it all there, and depending on your bargaining skills – for relatively cheap. I can’t guarantee how legal it would all be, though, since I went there with a friend who insisted on looking for a good price stolen bike after his brand new ~2000 shekel bike was stolen outside his house (and probably made its way to this market) 😛 :S
You can wonder around for hours, wonder in and out of shops, grab some delicious local food and bargain your heart out.
The lovely sign on the old bike reads:
This bike is in use, and not for sale. Please stop touching it. And if you insist on trying to buy it because “everything has a price” then congratulations for your mother’s profession and we beg you please don’t bother me.
This Hebrew sign reads:
Selling everything till the last item, all for 1/3 the price.
This next guy, if you’ll bother zooming in, is selling cockroaches, “for cheap”.
If you wondered what “local food” means, then they have all sorts, but one of my favorites is Shakshuka. The Jaffian Dr. Shakshua might not look like much, but trust me – even with a Matza on Passover (a disgusting bread substitute meant for Passover) – it tastes like heaven.
