Beginning of this year I had the chance to go back and revisit a lovely university campus in Israel – the Tel Aviv University. Following a meeting in a nearby coffee shop with some of the local faculty, I spent a couple of hours roaming the lovely campus. I’ve been here before, I’m sure of it, and yet I couldn’t remember a thing – it was like seeing the campus for the first time. It’s quite lovely, with those palm trees and various peculiar artsy sculptures and strange buildings, it’s an odd mixture of gracefully aging towards being run down yet renewing and rejuvenating in some parts. But the most interesting part is watching the locals, whose style I should be familiar with, and yet I realized I’m not. It’s very different than any other campus I’ve been to, the students are noticeably older (army service + travel gap year, probably), very casual in a rugged hipstery almost fashionable just-got-out-of-bed-i-want-to-look-like-i-don’t-care look, with what seems like a good mix of geeks and sociable student populations. Couldn’t really grasp that well, but I’ll get another chance later this year.
For now, here’s a summary of my walking tour of the Tel Aviv University campus…
