Following a short stay getting my bearings in Colombo, I decided to head to the mountains. I had very limited time and public transport is time consuming, and so the visitor’s center made a good argument for renting a car with a driver, something I’m typically very reluctant to do. But it worked out nicely, my driver spoke great English and was very friendly, and definitely helped much in getting things done, me being last minute and having no plans and all. We headed up to the north east, making a stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple, then going for a Safari tour at Kaudulla National Park, staying overnight in Sigiriya and starting early to hike up the Sigiriya Lion Rock where I just happened to run into the one Sri-Lankan I knew from uni who just happened to be traveling there at the time. Small world.
To get you started with this lovely region, here are my “visions” of Sri-Lank’s Dambulla and Sigiriya…
