I’m quite blessed. The small university I’m currently with – HKUST – is located on a mountain ridge overlooking the Sai Kung Peninsula with some of the best scenic views of any university anywhere in the world. Campus reaches all the way down to the water, so we have two little beaches and our very own pier, a pier we sometimes use to venture out from on a privately rented yacht. Isn’t that fantastic?

So it’s time I take you out on one of those boat trips around the Sai Kung Peninsula. The most recent one I’ve been to was our department’s Christmas party (MGMT), in what was a beautiful sunny day, taking us around the small islands of the area, all the way up north-east to the newly declared National Geopark displaying some ancient rock formations, passing by wonderful beaches, and giving us a chance to see local fishermen in their daily fishing routine.

So, to start off, our little yacht picked us up from the HKUST pier…

What’s to see? I’ll let the views speak for themselves…

You’ll notice some of those rocks seem a bit out-of-the-ordinary. Those are already within the geo-park area.

After a couple of hours touring around we made a stop at the Hap Mun Bay beach on Sharp Island, reachable with local boats from Sai Kung Town if you’re ever interested in visiting some day. Though I’ve been to Sharp Island before, thos was actually my first time to visit this specific beach.

So from the yacht, we took turns getting on a smaller boat that took us to the Hap Mun Bay pier.

And after a short walk from the pier…

we arrived at the beach.

A truly nice little beach, soft white sand, water looking good, and completely deserted in this time of year. Since we can see this beach from campus I believe that aside from weekends – even in the hot summer days this beach is usually empty. I’ve seen a few kayakers take off from our university pier on their personal kayaks and head over to that beach to enjoy a day chilling out in what can be perceived as their private beach.

No wonder the locals look so chilled out and happy… 😛

So head over to Sai Kung Town and find yourself a boat tour around the Sai Kung Peninsula, or better yet – come visit me on our little campus, and let’s try and book ourselves our own fishermen boat to pick us up from the pier. 🙂
