Ever wondered what a 500 feet dragon would look like? Tai Kok Tsui Temple Fair is an annual Hong Kong event at the local Hung Shing temple in Kowloon running various Chinese cultural performances for a whole day. The highlight of the day, in the evening, is the 500 feet dragon dance.
Here’s the description from the HK government website:
Get a taste of Chinese culture in this whole-day fair featuring a parade with more than 500 participants in special costumes, cultural performance including acrobatics, Chinese Ku Fu, Chinese dance, a Big Bowl Feast, games and souvenir stalls, as well as the not-to-be-missed 500-foot-long luminous dancing dragon and much, much more.
The 2010 performance schedule featured :
I arrived around 8pm, just in time to catch some high velocity drumming and the dragon being set-up.
Here’s a short video of the drumming performance:

Finally, a video of the actual dragon dance :
The locals were extremely excited about the dragon, making the atmosphere really fun. The dance itself isn’t all that magnificent, compared with Tin Hau Temple’s Tai Hang fire-dragon, but it was still an experience to watch.
