The last stop on my trip around Central America after Cuba and Costa Rica was Nicaragua. Compared to the ease of travel in Costa Rica, Nicaragua was rough and far less developed for the midrange to upscale tourist. I rented a car at San Jose in Costa Rica and returned the car at the Costa Rica side of the border in Penas Blancas, crossed over by foot and picked up a new rental car on the Nicaraguan side. Then, I roamed the western side of Nicaragua for a few days.
The highlight of the trip, by far, was Granada, which I spent a few nights in to explore the area. I also ventured off from Granada to the north west, going through the volcano region, passing by Managua, and finally making it all the way up to Leon. Gorgeous areas, lots of mirador observation points and active volacanos to watch, with bizarre attractions of run-down fort-jails, and interesting local life.
