I didn’t spent much time in San Jose, but I did get to venture out and see some funky attractions in the area. One of those is the Sanatorium Dr. Carlos Duran Cartin, about half an hour to the east on the way to Irazú Volcano. It’s not entirely clear how this became a tourist attraction, but the ruins of this former hospital are a combination of creepy and mysterious. The locals seem to love it, with lots of weird photo opportunities to take some nice selfies. I spent about an hour exploring the complex, roaming the strange rooms and enjoying how rundown everything was and the colorful graffitis.

Location:
A nice place to stop by for a bit on the way to the Volcano.
