At the small village of Rijkhoven in the eastern Belgium region of Limburg bordering with the Dutch Limburg and the city of Maastricht is a 16th century castle – Alden Biesen. It’s not the grandest or the most beautiful castle in the area, but if you’re in the area, or looking for a day trip from Maastricht, Tongeren, Hasselt, or Liege, then this castle is a nice detour for about an hour. There’s a church, a park, some gardens, and various visiting exhibitions. Every once in a while they also host some events.
Here’s what to expect if you’re thinking of visiting…
Location:
We combined this with a quick tour of Tongeren’s old center, and two attractions in Hasselt – the Japanese gardens (lovely but rather small) and the culture-nature park (soso, only if you’re really bored).
During summer in the castle of Alden Biesen you can enjoy the opera as well if you are interested (also opera especially for kids).

Thanks for the tip. Should be cool to see an opera in a place like that 🙂
