When touring around Denmark, I wanted to learn more about Viking culture, so I made a stop at Roskilde Denmark, where there’s a small culture village and a museum dedicated to the regional folk history with some about the vikings. It was interesting to go around and explore on my own, but the most revealing was an English guided tour I joined at the museum, which introduced us to a lot of the regional history and stories. Vikings, obviously, are just a small part of the long history of this region, made more famous by recent promotion by the Danish government and some popular TV series. Lots to learn about boats, ships, seafaring, and all that this entails. There’s a good collection of ships that have been fished out of the deep waters, in surprisingly good shape considering the time that has passed and the materials used for construction. From these exhibitions and the tours you really do get a feel for the complexity, dangers, and adventure of roaming the rough northern seas trading all over the world and – for a short period of time – also conquering anyone that stands in their way.
The old town center is a lovely and a good place to start…
But the highlight is the vikings village…
And the nearby museum…
