Lukang’s old streets is a reminder of the alternative style the Chinese/Taiwanese culture could have offered the world. Those magical small streets hidden between exceptionally ordinary Taiwanese small-town streets are what – IMHO – Taiwanese cities could have felt like if it wasn’t for the pressure to modernize (/westernize /industrialize).
We started off with a tour of the Lukang Folks Art Museum that’s in a Japanese era built house from the 1920s with some parts dating back to the 18th century.
The museum, among art collectables, tries to show what life was like living at the house.
Through the backside and after a 5 minutes getting-lost walk we arrived at the old street. And what a lovely little old street it was…
Heading back to Taichung, we had dinner at the Greek Santorini restaurant located at the beautiful street next to the Taichung Fine Arts Museum.
That just about wrapped up our Nan Tou and Taichung tour.
Hi Fili,
We must have just missed each other. John and I were also in Lukang over the holidays. We met up with Mark Forman and his family for the day. What a charming little gem of a town. You look like you enjoyed it as much as we did.
Lugang is cool. I’ve been there quite a few times, and regularly do a lot of cycling in the area – there’s some very cool old villages and coastline quite close to the town.
