One of the highlights of beautiful Ghent is the medieval 12th century Gravensteen castle at the heart of the old town. If you want to get a sense of the crusaders’ sense of justice and prison system, especially if you’re fascinated by the various means by which a person can be tortured, this is the place for you. There are detailed exhibitions in every room, with an interesting tour path that will take you through all the main functions of this castle. The castle is quite well-preserved, and the exhibitions are enlightening. At the top, you’ll find great views of Ghent in every direction, and that – alone – is worth the visit.
