Maastricht is a small town in the southern Limburg province of the Netherlands on the border with Belgium and very close to Germany. In my previous visits to the Netherlands it was a bit far off my travel route and I honestly haven’t heard much about it as a travel destination. But, academia led me to Maastricht University, and so I had a few days to walk around Maastricht old town and found it all to be really charming, a place with character. The central area of the old town offers brick roads, ruins of old forts and ancient walls, and beautiful cathedrals. For a town this size, there’s actually surprisingly much to see and do and it’s all quite international, in part because of the large student and Xpat community.
So, to kick things off, here are my visions of Maastricht from my first couple of days wondering around town…
The river
The old center
Western Maastricht
The hill and old fort
Shopping and partying

Location:
Definitely worth a weekend trip or a detour if you’re visiting western West Germany, eastern Belgium, or southern Holland. Much more on Maastricht to come.
