Visiting Johannesburg, I joined a tour of Soweto. Having listened to Trevor Noah’s book on his childhood growing up in Soweto, it was interesting to try and make sense of what life might have been like growing up in that neighborhood and during Apartheid regime. It’s difficult to get a real sense of things, though you can see it’s far more basic than some parts of wealthier Johannesburg and some of the challenges.
The tour stopped in a few tourist locations, one of them the Mandela House, dedicated to Mandela’s heritage and memory.
A tour well worth doing if you’re visiting Johannesburg and want to know more about the local historical and current complexities.
