While roaming around Saint Petersburg on foot, exploring canals, and viewing gorgeous architecture I arrived at the Peter and Paul Fortress. Built by Peter the Great in the 18th century, this fort commands the water pathways of the Saint Petersburg area, and was later converted to an Alcatraz like prison. You can go up to walk on the fortifications, enjoy some sovenieur shopping in the many shops set out in the inner area, and visit the grand Peter and Paul Cathedral. Finally, being a part of the St. Petersburg Museum of History, you’ll have the option of seeing various exhibitions about former Russia and the local history of Saint Petersburg.
Location:
Make sure to visit if you’re exploring Saint Petersburg, even if only for a short stroll through the complex.
