A Yiddish speaking New York Jew reporter Ross (Shmuel) Perlin covers China in a series of terrific videos discussing China and Chinese culture. With his relative fluency in Mandarin Chinese, Perlin goes around China taking a look at some very fundamental issues underlying Chinese society.
First time I saw those Yiddish videos I thought it was a bit surreal. Who, I wondered, of the Orthodox Yiddish speaking Jews, would be interested in those videos?
But matter of fact is that no matter whether you’re Jewish or not – if you’re interested in China – I believe you’ll enjoy these videos with Perlin’s observations and interviews.
Following are a few of the earlier highlight videos. Many more videos available here – http://yiddish.forward.com/video/china

Jewish Shanghai Lost and Found
Growing old in China
A great project, very interesting to watch. Thanks, Perlin.
wow wow wow… this is too awesome. would this mean there is a increasing number of non-religious yiddish speakers, or growing interest in China among orthodox folks.. either way, it’s as surreal as heartwarming.
thought I was a loyal follower to fili’s world, roughly since 2006 (ahem), but funny, there are always posts that I’ve missed. good to have your blog back 🙂
