During my trip across Costa Rica, I rented a 4×4 and made my way up north towards the border with Nicaragua. After visiting La Fortuna and the nearby volcano mountains I turned back south to tackle some rough roads to get up the mountain to the Monteverde mountain top getaway, famous for its adventure zip-lining and gorgeous natural scenic views of the volcanic region. It was well worth it. The town itself is quite charming, and I did a few tourist attractions, including my first ever zipline experience, with a night walk with a local guide to see some of the local wild life in their natural habitat. Some of it was very touristy, and I can tell the town has really been transformed by the incoming tourist flux, but you can still get a bit of the local vibe. I was also able to find two (!) very authentic middle-eastern joints and talk a bit with the local owners and hear the story of what brought them here and how the tourists and locals react to veggie and/or Israeli food.
Here is a photo summary of my adventures in the Monteverde and some of the gorgeous natural scenery.
