On the western banks of the Chao Phraya river crossing Bangkok in Thonburi, is a newly renovated area of an old 19th century Chinese mansion, that is worth a visit. I visited during the pandemic, discovering it by staying nearby close to Icon Siam, and so it was dead quiet, and I had the whole place for myself to explore. There are some galleries, a temple, nice shops and a lovely coffee shop, and a few food stalls with quick bites. I can imagine this being a major local attraction and a tourist magnet for Chinese tourists when Bangkok is back to full tourism mode, but for me it being empty like that added to the charm and appeal of this place. They’ve done a really great job with this, and when it’s quiet it’s really worthwhile taking it slow and lingering a bit longer. Once you’re done, you can go see the river, and within quick taxi rides are several museums and gorgeous template. I think that when things are back to normal, there should also be a ferry crossing over to China Town on the other side of the river.
Here’s a brief summary of my visit…
