After visiting Portugal’s Coimbra and Obidos, I continued down south to a lovely mountain top medieval castle/fort in Leiria, followed by a very large 14th century Gothic monastery in Batalha. Spent a couple of hours exploring each, with almost no one around, and the views from the top on Leiria and the grand architecture in Batalha were quite impressive. Not a must, but a good way to break up the trip between Coimbra and the southern coast, Sintra, or Lisbon.
