Going a bit off the beaten track in Chang Mai, on my second day I rode my scooter down south west to explore the mountain top Wat Phra That Doi Kham, a 7th century with a 17m sitting Buddha. Some good people watching to do up there, as I think it get more locals than it does foreign tourists, who probably prefer the Doi Suthep, a bit further to the north.
The temple complex overlooks the entire Chang Mai valley, which – during my visit – was very smoggy from the local farmers burning their fields. Despite the low visibility, being up there I was able to notice a very large park below, which ended up being the gorgeous Royal Park Rajapruek, so together with the temple and some nearby hipster arts areas, this made for an especially nice surprise scooter day trip.
