In our tour of southern Italy, just before visiting the beautiful Capri Island, we spent a day tripping around the Parco Regionale dei Monti Lattari mountains and the Amalfi area. We took the SP1 road winding through narrow road and high mountains to Ravello, where we made a short stop to enjoy one of the villas and see a bit of downtown. We then stayed the night at the town of San Lazzaro to hike the path of the Gods the next day, and finally wrapped it up staying at a hotel between Termini and Capo D’arco overlooking Capri Island from afar. The driving experience in that area is completely insane, narrow winding roads going up and down and only fit for one car being used by cars coming from both directions, not to mention that the local drivers are complete nuts. I’d only suggest this to highly experienced drivers and with a strong but compact car (and insurance, ofcourse). If you don’t mind that, the Amalfi area is filled with spectacular views, gorgeous mountain-cliff scenery and some pretty decent beaches. There’s a good reason why this area is so popular with tourists, and you’ll see hordes of tourists packed into tourist buses racing through the difficult roads.
To kick things off, here are my visions of the Amalfi area…
