During one of the cold storms of Illinois I felt like I had no choice but to run away and warm up during the weekend. The visit to Mexico City left a lasting impression on me and so I was looking for something similar that might offer a bit of colonial history, a taste of local culture, good food and friendly locals. Direct flights from Chicago brought up Guadalajara as an option, and a quick lookup showed that it might offer me what I needed, with its old town and Tequila close by. Although it was a very short weekend trip, I believe I was able to cover Guadalajara and Tequila quite well, with enough Tequila shots, colonial building and Mariachi music to help me through the tough northern winters.
Before going into the specific things I saw, I present to you an introductory ‘visions’ of Guadalajara, highlighting some of the wonderful local attractions and set in wonderfully warm and sunny weather…
My favorite part of the city is probably Tlaquepaque, the land of Mariachi, but the old town is also quite charming with a few decent museums and great food options.
Location:
Due to time constraints I had to give up a couple of major sites (like the round pyramids of Zona Arqueológica de Guachimontones and Lake Chapala), but in summary – it’s a good city for a short weekend escape, but there isn’t enough in the area for much longer. More on Guadalajara and Tequila to follow…
