The last stop on my trip around Central America after Cuba and Costa Rica was Nicaragua. Compared to the ease of travel in Costa Rica, Nicaragua was rough and far less developed for the midrange to upscale tourist. I rented a car at San Jose in Costa Rica and returned the car at the Costa Rica side of the border in Penas Blancas, crossed over by foot and picked up a new rental car on the Nicaraguan side. Then, I roamed the western side of Nicaragua for a few days.
The highlight of the trip, by far, was Granada. Even when I finally decided to venture out, the other cities in Nicaragua paled in comparison and so for the final nights in Nicaragua I decided to make it back. Aside from the lovely town, there’s much to do and see in the area, with the islets, the volcanoes, the mirador observation decks, and a couple of odd forts and markets.
