During my summer stay in the northern Hokkaido region of Japan, I was based in Susukino. Lots of funky things to see and do in Susukino, it’s quite the Japanese adventure, but here I’ll mention four of the tourist/cultural things I did during the time I was there…
Maid Cafe
Lots of Otaku geeks getting served by talkative Japanese hostesses dressed up as French maids. Nothing sexual, just weird, these guys are so shy, and for them this place is an escape. Taking photos of the girls is not allowed, unless from behind, but you can see their badges, they’re meant to be super sweet rather than sexy, and they all have a character that they develop over time.
Tanukikoji Shopping Street
The main covered shopping/tourist street in Susukino, with a large variety of restaurants, bars, hotels, etc. If you’re visiting Sapporo, you’ll get here at some point, probably.
Ramen Street
If you like Ramen, then this is where you’ll go eat. I visited a few times, different place each time, and they were all splendid, quick, clean, cheap, and with the most amazing Ramen flavours.
TV and Clock Tower
In the center of Sapporo, if you feel like seeing things from above, head over to the TV tower. Not too far away is the historical clock tower. Not really sure why it’s such an attraction, but there’s a small history museum inside.
Location:
Great area, the perfect traveler base for Japanese adventures.
