One of my favorite parts of Kaoshiung is the ultra-funky Lotus Pond in Zuoying. It’s a large lake surrounded by crazy temples and traditional Taiwanese culture attractions. For anyone from non Buddhist/Daoism cultures, this area gives a theme-park feel, with lots of creatures and Gods, gorgeous lake scenery combines with odd temple structures. It’s a really fun place to explore for a whole day.
It’s been over 10 years since I last visited (visit 1, visit 2), and end of last year I finally had a chance to go and revisit, and it was as good as I remembered it, maybe better. It didn’t have the surprise and astonishment component I had the first time I visited, but I think that it’s the part of Taiwanese culture that I really missed from the time that I lived in Taiwan.
