Scenic views of Saint Petersburg from Saint Isaac’s Cathedral

When I stopped over in Moscow for a few days I was contemplating whether I have enough time to go see Saint Petersburg, but everyone I asked recommended that I do without any hesitation. So, early morning I took the 4-hour fast train to Saint Petersburg without doing any homework and not knowing what to expect. The last minute B&B I booked was suppose to be centrally located and the nearest attraction was Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, so once I got rid of my luggage I headed out to see ‘yet another cathedral’. But, thing is about this cathedral, is that it has an observation deck on the top, one of the highest points in the very flat Saint Petersburg, a good way to get my bearings on a new place. Saint Petersburg, without doubt, is absolutely gorgeous. I was already impressed with the Russia I discovered in Moscow, but Saint Petersburg was like nothing I imagined it to be, a real colonial gem filled with huge canals, magnificent mansions, Russian style churches, and top-notch gardens and parks. Getting up on Saint Issac’s gave me a first glimpse into all that, and as I was climbing up the stairs to the observatory with the scenery slowly coming into view I realized this short trip is going to be very special.
