Costa Rica prides itself to be an eco destination with preservation of nature and wild life. All across Costa Rica are sanctuaries meant to protect wild animals, with different sanctuaries specializing in different animals and species. In all my tour around Costa Rica I have only visited one sanctuary, and I was lucky to choose Santuario de lapas NATUWA. An American student volunteer took me and two others on a tour of the premises with in-depth explanation about what they do there and why it’s important. Even though it was obvious he does a few of those a day, he was very patient and enthusiastic and devoted long time to take us around and explain everything in detail. To contrast some of the other ecotourism attractions I visited in Costa Rica this fely much more authentic, and the fact the guide was a volunteer telling us about his life and personal journey made a huge difference. It was engaging and inspiring. This sanctuary is mainly for the Macaw parrots, but they have quite a selection of wildlife there, monkeys, tigers, wild boars, and lots of birds. The living conditions seem pretty good and the cages well maintained, with some of the birds roaming free.
I do recommend drop by if you’re in the area.
