Lots of museums all over Amsterdam and most of them are really top-notch, so it you’re a museum fan then you’ll be able to spend days going from one museum to another. A concentration of the best art museums is at the Museum District (Museumplein) which hosts the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk Museum. Since I was experiencing a bit of art museum fatigue, I chose to just do a quick visit to one of those – the Rijksmuseum, a museum dedicated to the arts and history of the Netherlands. You can expect to find lots of dear Dutch friends like Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Vermeer. It’s a busy place with long lines, so I booked the ticket on my mobile to skip the lines and then went in for a couple of hours following the crowds to get a glimpse of some of the very well known art pieces up close in person.
At the center of the museum district is the famous "Iamsterdam" statue-symbol-logo offering an opportunity for selfies and group photos, if you can somehow avoid getting all those other people in the shot.
Walking in…
You’ll join hundreds others to get close to the famous works of art…
Managed to get close enough, yippi, though once I did I wasn’t sure what to do next and the people waiting behind get restless rather fast. The appeal of certain art pieces will probably continue to baffle me for the rest of my life. Sure, there might be a stroke of genius in all this I’m incapable of recognizing, but looking at the insanity around those things in museums it just feels like it’s about branding. Rembrandt was probably a social media expert, or something.
So, yeah, other things to see as well, so it’s not all famous paintings.
Location :
A rather pleasant even if somewhat overcrowded two hour cruise through Dutch art. Probably a must to Dutch art lovers, definitely not a must to tired travelers who have been to too many art museums in their recent travels.
