One of the highlights of beautiful Sintra, a quick daytrip from Lisbon in Portugal, is the Park and National Palace of Pena. It’s a 19th century UNESCO heritage Romanticist castle on top of a mountain overlooking the town of Sintra from above. I visited quite a few castles around my world over the years, but this Disney like fantasy castle is something else. The architecture and wild Portuguese colors make for an especially funky look. With the spectacular views in every direction, this is truly a magical place to visit.
Aside from the panoramic views, the terrific building, and the various rooms, you can also hike around the mountain park and see some of the nearby gardens.
Shall we go in?
Location:
Not to be missed it you’re visiting Sintra. Be sure to also visit the nearby ruins of the Castle of the Moors, only a short walk from the castle. More on that to come.
