I love specialty museums. Over the years, the more I traveled – the more I grew tired of the typical arts, history, natural history, and science museums. To impress me, I need a city to offer me specialty museums, and luckily – Lisbon has plenty of those. Lisbon has museums about Fado, Lisbon city, design , old electricity factory, maritime, water , azulejo, public transport, and my personal favorite – the coach museum. There are actually two coach museums, the old and the new, and you can buy a combined ticket. If you’re thinking to just settle for the new, don’t. The old one is very charming, and definitely worth a look. Dating back to 1726, it takes you back in time to learn the impressive history of Portuguese carriage transport. Each one of the coaches is a work of art, showing grandeur and sophistication, with a display of advances in technology over time, that which eventually made coaches more functional, cheap, and common rather than just luxury transport for royalty. The building itself is also impressive, with works of art everywhere.

If you plan to visit the Ajuda area of western Lisbon, then I definitely recommend stopping in to have a look. There aren’t many such museums in the world, so it’s very refreshing to see something new and learn about a whole new area you never even thought could be this interesting.
