In my last few weeks in the Netherlands I was trying to see as much as possible by taking all kinds of strange train routes and making stops in places I have not been to before. A trip to Tilburg and a block train rail in Eindhoven got me to transfer through Nijmegen, and since I’ve never been i made a stop to explore a bit of the area. To my surprise, there was the Nijmegen cultural medieval festival (Gebroeders van Limburg Festival/photos/video), with lots of street performers showing Nijmegen Dutch life back in the good old days when there was no electricity, the streets were running with sewage, religion dominated people’s minds, folk legends of dragons and warriors were abound, and people were in constant fear for their health and/or safety from an endless array of threats. I don’t speak Dutch, but it was obvious watching the show that the locals were having lots of fun and it was quite amusing. I spent half a day exploring around the old town, going into various buildings and museums and just getting a kick of this unexpected festival treat. Another highlight was the bell tower, where I saw the pianist play the church bells. Lovely.
So, here is a brief photo summary, followed by a video summary, of my lovely day at Nijmegen …
