Visible from almost every corner or Sicily is the impressive active volcano mountain – Etna. Occasionally it erupts and has a devastating impact on the area, but most time it’s on fair low heat and visitors can hike up all the way to the top and get a glimpse of the volcano. We were less adventurous, doing the tourist route of taking the cable car up and then two heavy road buses getting us as close as possible to the peak. We were expecting to up even further with a guide but as we arrived there they said Etna was being dangerous again so we just enjoyed the grand panoramic views of the area and the guided demonstrations of the fire mountain. When it comes to family fun, this is a fun – even if fairly overpriced and commercialized – attraction, but to those more adventurous, like my little sis, you might be disappointed. So, it would be wise to plan and book things in advance, and do the harder hikes up the mountain early in the morning. That’s when Etna will reveal itself in full glory.
So, let’s get up the mountain and take a look…
Cable car…
Then a road truck/bus…
And then you’ll start noticing active volcanos and snow…
Some of the local guides will use all kinds of tricks to show you it’s a real mountain with real fire…
Location:
To most, this is probably the number one highlight of a visit to Sicily.
