Was looking for something fun to do near Granada and someone mentioned to me I should head down to the east coast a short drive from Granada to check out Isletas de Granada, the small islands of Granada where the Nicaraguan expat wealthy have turned small islands into small kingdoms. You bargain a bit for a boat, or rent a kayak, and go explore around the narrow river bends surrounding the islands. If you have a good guide, and/or can speak Spanish (I was lucky to have an enthusiastic local translate some for me), you’ll get to hear who lives where and how much money their house or island costs, and to then contrast this with the poverty of the local fishermen nearby. It’s a nice way to spend half a day to see something a bit different and learn a bit about local life.
