Over the years I’ve developed an increasing fondness of contemporary art museums. The more traditional art museums have their appeal too, ofcourse, but with those I usually know what to expect – a few highlights of Picasso, some Chagall, maybe some Dali and then endless other artists from the past 400-500 years I know very little about but have become familiar with their style. Contemporary art museums? that’s a whole different ball game. Whether I like what I see or not, whether I "understand" it or not, I atleast know that I’ll be surprised, challenged and that it will make me think about what I see.
The Boston Institute of Contemporary Art did a very decent job at that. Though it’s a bit small compared to others I’ve visited, almost every room had something that made me stop and take a long look. With some contemporary artists, sometimes they’re out to shock you or disgust you or just be there, but with these exhibits there was a general style to it all that was very esthetic and quite beautiful.
What do I mean? here, have a look yourself at the different rooms and exhibits and judge those yourself…
Lovely, isn’t it? whatever this is… 🙂
There were also, naturally, the usual odd pieces that make you ask "why is this thing in a museum?"…
And there were also some adorable cuties…
as well as opportunities for self portraits…
The location is a bit off, down towards southern Boston, but it’s a pleasant walk and the views of the Boston shores are spectacular…
