The small town of Maastricht has quite a few great tourist attractions, but perhaps the biggest highlight has to do with the Maastricht Saint Peter hill which features the Saint Pete Fortress and a large array of underground tunnels. A combined tour can last about 2 hours and give you an introduction to the long history of Maastricht dating back to the Romans, through regional wars, the world wars, and the Maastricht treaty that pushed the idea of the European Union forward.
When my parents visited, I decided it was time to go see the attraction, and we joined both tours. I think we were all surprised just how nice the tours were and how much there was to see and experience. These two sites make for a very unique attraction that I haven’t quite seen elsewhere.
We started off with the fort…
And continued to the underground tunnels and the underground paintings…
If you want, you can also later tour the rest of the mountain, or what’s left of it after the mine dug half of it away. This will cease in 2017 and will be turned into a cultural center, but for now you can see the extent of the ecological damage to the mountain …
Location:
This is probably a must-do if you’re visiting Maastricht for a day. It’s best to book these tours in advance, and you can choose from a number of combinations of the Saint Pete fort and various entrances to the tunnels.
