On my last day in Xiamen I was lucky to meet with a local who was sweet to take me for a drive-through tour of Xiamen. It was really what I would consider a five star tour. We drove around the beach line with occasional stops to walk around and take some photos. On a regular weekday, Xiamen seems beautiful and laid back. On the horizon, not too far away, you can see Taiwan’s Kinmen islands, where I hope to be able to visit some day. It was also on that day that I got to see Xiamen’s Guanyinshan Sand Sculptures Cultural Park and do a really Crazy Fire Feet Massage, so overall a very enjoyable end to an overall wonderful visit.
To get a feel of that day in Xiamen, here are some of the highlights we saw…
Matsu in all her glory.
If Daoist Gods aren’t your things, there’s plenty of people watching to go around…
With some nice white-sand beach fronts…
and charming promenades…
I think that of all places I’ve been to in China, Xiamen was perhaps the most charming of them all. Standard of living seems very high compared to other cities in China, and not nearly as crowded/polluted/noisy/over-commercial.
going to live there next year lucky me!
Ruth – terrific. have fun!
where can I get local sim card in Xiamen. plan to visit on the 10th of June
You can do it in any train/ferry/air port, and any mobile shop. you’ll need a passport and some basic Mandarin or off-line Google Translate skills. It’s unlikely any of them would be able to converse in English. If you have a local friend, have them write the request clearly to you in Chinese.
