Overlooking Qin Huai River and not too far from old Nanjing walls and the Gate of China is the Nanjing Confucius Temple featuring one of the biggest statues of the great teacher. In Taiwan I’ve been told that Confucian temples generally are not suppose to have statues, just scrolls, but this doesn’t seem to be the case in China. Plenty of God-like scholars make appearance and receive honor and respect as much as other Daoist figurines in other local temples and it seems there are more rituals involved.
The temple supposedly dates back to 1034, though Nanjing has seen its share of wars and revolutions throughout the years so it had to go through a few renewals and that also means a combination of architectural styles from various dynasties.
It’s quite a bit complex, with various exhibitions inside the halls…
Outside the complex is the river, which serves as a bustling shopping area to hang out at, day…
or night…
Various attractions within walking distance, like the Nanjing Meixiang Mansion – a privately owned old house turned Chinese tea house…
A lovely area, well worth a visit.
